On January 4th, 2010, the Kepler Science Team announced the first five worlds discovered by the Kepler Space Telescope.

These planets are larger, Jupiter-sized ones, instead of the smaller Earth-sized planets it was designed to detect, but these discoveries pave the way by assuring that the systems all work and that the science goals will be met.

This announcement was made at the Meeting of the American Astronomical Society being held this week in Washington DC. Here is a link to the press release:

This was the fastest I’ve ever made a video. I was heading off to bed at about11:30 pm, cozy in bed with my laptop when I first read the release – I was uploading this video by 3:00 am.

I felt this news was important because many Space Fans have been asking questions about what Kepler is and how it worked.

Keep Looking Up!

NASA’s Kepler mission has discovered its first Earth-size planet candidates and its first candidates in the habitable zone, a region where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface. Five of the potential planets are near Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of smaller, cooler stars than our sun.

Kepler also found six confirmed planets orbiting a sun-like star, Kepler-11. This is the largest group of transiting planets orbiting a single star yet discovered outside our solar system. Located approximately 2,000 light years from Earth, Kepler-11 is the most tightly packed planetary system yet discovered. All six of its confirmed planets have orbits smaller than Venus, and five of the six have orbits smaller than Mercury’s.

Could we be unique in the universe or is there another planet similar to earth somewhere in the cosmos? Is it possible that Alpha Centauri, our nearest star, is home to another earth-like planet? Earth sized planets have been hard to find, but indirect methods are coming on line to give scientists a good survey of how many such bodies may be in the universe. How rare would it be to find life on another earth-like planet? Follow UFOs and Alien Life on Twitter @http://twitter.com/ufosalienlife

Learn more about Kepler’s search for habitable planets. This is a great video for all answers you may have about Kepler.

As you know Kepler 16b has recently been discovered. This is a planet that has 2 suns like Tatooine from Star Wars.

By popular Space Fan request, I offer this video to help answer some of your questions regarding the expanding universe. Many of you consistently ask: If the universe is expanding, then what is it expanding into?

This concept is non-trivial to try and explain in a 5 minute YT video, but I do my best. I hope this helps!

Thanks to all of you space fans for watching this channel, it means a lot to me.
