Romney did well in the GOP Debate the other night so the question now is “Will people change their minds about voting for a Mormon when last election they said they wouldn’t?
Perry pretty much shot himself in the foot in the last GOP debate when he spoke about giving education grants to illegal immigrant’s children on the “Tax-Payer’s Dime”. That comment did not sit well with the audience or the Republican Party. It appears that this comment may have been his “Knock Out” blow.
Michelle Bachmann may now be out as well. She doesn’t seem to have recovered from her comment about the Gardasil shot being dangerous. As Governor of Texas, Rich Perry had given an Executive Order to give twelve year old girls a shot of Gardasil to help prevent cervical cancer from an HPV infection. Medical research does not support that concern.
Romney shines well right now. Experts say this is true because he has already been through the fire so-to-speak, from being in the 2008 Presidential campaign. This experience gives him an edge and shows confidence when on the road.
The media, placing Perry and Romney as the main leaders and the second tier basically irrelevant, found their assessment very wrong. Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, and Gary Johnson made it clear that they are still in it to win, that they are serious contenders, and that anything can happen — just as it often does this early in the campaign.
WILL CHRIS CHRISTIE STILL BECOME A CANDIDATE?
Newsmax reports that Christie is now considering a go for the Presidency in 2012. We have heard Christie say many times that he will not run but he has been in dialog for the past few weeks, with several leading Republican donors and fundraisers.
Governor Christie became a popular figure because of his no-nonsense attitude towards life’s situations and political policies.
This attitude became apparent with his handling of a heckler in Meg Whitman’s Town Hall meeting during her campaign for Governor of California.
The now popular Republican Governor of New Jersey was asked to reconsider his decision about not running and to enter the GOP primary. Christie supporters feel that significant GOP support is still not there for Rick Perry and Mitt Romney as being a serious contender in the primary fight to win the 2012 election.
Many leading fundraisers have not yet committed to any current primary contender, including the current front-runners. Newsmax reports that “the effort to draft Christie culminated in a hush-hush pow-wow held in the past week with Christie and several notable Republican billionaires. A source familiar with the meeting suggested that Christie seemed inclined to enter the race but said he needed more time. Christie promised to make a final decision “within two weeks,” the source said.
Another source involved in GOP fundraising tells Newsmax that that uncommitted fundraisers and donors have been receiving phone calls from top political aides to Christie, seeking their feedback about his possible entry into the race. Earlier this week Christie hinted at the effort to draft him when he spoke at a special forum that included Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels.
Christie suggested to an audience at New Jersey’s Rider University that the current GOP candidates are not answering the public’s appetite for real leadership. “I think what the country is thirsting for, more than anything else right now, is someone of stature and credibility to tell them that and say, ‘Here’s where I want us to go to deal with this crisis,’” Christie said.
Christie continued: “The fact that nobody yet who’s running for president, in my view, has done that effectively is why you continue to hear people ask Daniels if he’ll reconsider and ask me if I’ll reconsider.” Christie has consistently and categorically stated that he would not run for president in 2012, noting he had significant work still to accomplish in New Jersey. But New Jersey and New York Republican donors and bundlers who have backed Christie also have been courted in the past several months by Texas Gov. Perry’s campaign.
