I have mixed feelings about the letter you posted from local scientists. I agree, to a point, that something needs to be done but there are some flaws in their thinking that I would like to address.

Thank you.

Dear Respective Scientists,

Although I am not as educated as you, I do watch programs on the Science and National Geographic Channels to learn about earth and the universe. Therefore, I admit that my education on this topic is limited but that does not preclude me having some thoughts on the subject.

I do recognize that we are having a change in the weather cycle–it’s obvious. However, history shows that this is not abnormal for our planet. For example, our deserts were once plush with green vegetation thousands of years ago but are now arid. We know that because geologists have gone through several layers of soil and have seen the changes in vegetation due to weather.

In addition to past changes in weather, we recently learned that our planet is NOT the only one heating up in the solar system. You probably know as well that the earth and sun are coming closer to each other and that, at some point, the earth will burn up and the sun will cease to exist as a star. However, all of this HAS NOTHING to do with what man is doing to the earth’s atmosphere now.

I recognize that, with the knowledge we have now, mankind must accept that we do play a small role in contaminating the air that we breathe and that we need to do something to improve the situation. It would be most ignorant of us to think that we can continue to produce emissions into the air and not have it affect us. Nevertheless, in my opinion, this does not mean that I believe global warming in general is a man-made thing when we talk about the outer atmosphere of the earth, at least to the point that you say is causing our weather problems today. I feel that way because we’ve had these problems in various times in earth’s history when mankind had nothing to do with it.

What I do believe is that the majority of what we hear about the earth heating up and/or weather changes is nothing more than scare tactics coming from Progressive Liberals who have a very clear agenda.

If we were to remove the agenda of Liberals and cut down to the crux of the matter, I think we can agree that man has to make some changes in their behavior, no question about it, and that any person who is responsible would recognize that fact. Individually, we need to recognize our part and do what we can to make personal changes. We would have a positive effect on society by our own actions, as being an example, without becoming radical or by placing mandated restrictions.

Mandated restrictions, because of laws generated by the “Liberal Left”, are my greatest pet peeves. I do not mean to be insulting to you when I say that I believe Liberals think they are wiser than the rest of us and thus, they must force us to accept their way of thinking. It is what it is, and all of us could use a little personal reflection on this point.

To be specific, I think that, if “Liberal” Scientists want us to pay attention to their concerns, it would be wise for them to persuade us through their own actions and not by force through mandates/laws. People object to force and they will turn away from a good idea as a result of that force. There are better ways than force/laws to get our attention and to get what you want, that’s all I’m saying.

My suggestion is to teach our youth in college that they need to take care of this earth without blaming past decades for the climate changes on earth today. Instead, too many professors try to blame parents for destruction of the earth’s resources. Teaching students how to be more aware of their responsibilities as an individual–without blaming parents, manufacturing, or anyone or anything else for our situation—would be a better approach to the problem. Otherwise, I doubt that you will get anywhere without forcing your will on us.

If I were you, I would write another letter to the Governor only, this time, I would write it with a much different tone. As a Conservative Governor, I would not give your letter any credence either the way it is written. I hope you will try it again but with a tone of cooperation and individual accountability instead of enacting laws. What do you think?
