Libyan Rebels are on their last leg of the battle for freedom. They are begging the United States to come and help them but it appears the U.S. is waiting to see what the United Nations is going to do. England, France, and Germany have not made the decision to do a “NO FLY ZONE” because it means declaring war on Libya. The UN is not ready to do that when it appears Gaddafi will win.
The Libyan rebels think the United States should help them because we have helped others in the past who suffer for freedom from a dictator. They wonder why we did so with Iraq and won’t do the same for them?
The US is reluctant to get involved in another war with two going on now so we are not quick to step into the Libyan conflict. Therefore, the US feels they will have to fight this one on their own.
Saudi Arabia has helped other Arab nations crush protesters, but presently they are in Bahrain. Their incentive for getting involved is to keep Iran from taking advantage of the unrest in the area. Last night the news showed Saudi tanks on the road and heading for Libya to help Gaddafi, but today the news seemed to back off that story so it’s not clear if Saudi troops are heading for Libya.
Embedded reporters say the Libyan rebels are not very skilled in weapons and so few of what they shoot actually hit targets. As a result, a lot of ammunition is wasted and cannot be replaced. At the same time, they are being hit with bombs from Gaddafi air planes and so many lives are lost.
The rebels swore that they would die fighting for freedom. Unfortunately, that is what’s happening. If they don’t die, they will be in trouble with Gaddafi. Many would rather die than be put in that situation. Some of them have headed Gaddafi’s warning and put down their weapons and walked away.
Gaddafi’s son has already said that the rebellion will be put down within 48 hours so it appears that this battle will come to an end shortly. Surely it is strange that all the other rebellions taking place in the Middle East have come out victorious so why is the Libyan rebellion losing? What is the difference?
One suggestion is that Gaddafi is already supportive of Muslim leadership where other leaders were not. There is no incentive for Saudi leadership to support a revolution in Libya.
The Middle East drama is an unsettling situation. Most of those nations are anti-America and the Western world but Gaddafi already has respect for America’s power because Reagan bombed him and killed family members.
Rebellions in the Arab/Muslim nations have caused many of us to feel uncomfortable about the situation and unsure about what will come next.
Do you feel concerned about rebellions going on in Libya and other Middle East nations? Why?
