News that on Friday, “Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran’s Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively “immune” to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton”… NewsMax.com
This article discusses whether or not we should worry about Iran’s ability to create a nuclear bomb and use it against Israel and the U.S. with some help from, China, Korea, Venezuela, and Russia (to name a few).
Reports from Fox News and News Max give us some facts to help us answer the question: Should we worry? After evaluating the information in this report, you should be able to decide for yourself if we should be worried.
The news we received on August 13, 2010 that Russia will be loading nuclear fuel rods into Iran’s reactor sent shock waves throughout the civilized world and has captured world-wide media attention.
Because of Iran’s actions, the news has us believing that we are entering a nuclear crisis. Is this true? Should we worry? For now, all it may mean is that this load of nuclear rods gives Iran’s president something to boast about because, even though it can only be used for heat, they finally have joined the nuclear age. If that’s the case, then we have nothing to worry about. If there’s more to it, then yes, maybe we should worry.
Fox News reported that the fuel rods Russia loads to Iran’s reactor is only about 3% of what would be needed to make a nuclear weapon. It would take at least 90% of this same fuel to make a weapon. Even if this loading of fuel is used just for nuclear heat, it is doubtful that Iran will be satisfied with claiming victory in entering the nuclear age.
As far as Iran really having the ability to make nuclear weapons now, experts say it is still years away from that becoming reality. So, if that’s true, can we relax about it at this time? No, we cannot afford to relax quite yet because we don’t know enough yet.
One expert says we don’t need to worry about Iran right now and Israel isn’t going to attack Iran. All we can do is pay close attention to Iran’s threat and continue sanctions, hoping it will keep him from getting nuclear weapons.
TODAY’S UPDATE
Something else to consider is that, as an Ambassador to the United Nations, Bolton knows Iran; he has had personal dealings with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. If Bolton says that Israel needs to bomb Iran this week, maybe we should appreciate the his warning that Iran is a threat right now!
According to an interview Bolton did with Fox News on Friday afternoon, “it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf”, he said….NewsMax.com
Does this report from NewsMax.com suggest that Bolton is right, we should be very concerned. What if he is overreacting with panic to what he thinks is a possible crisis? Remember that Bolton knows full well that this situation opens the door for Iran to eventually obtain nuclear weapons, and he knows that nobody will be able to stop it for fear of the danger it would create to try. Maybe he has a good reason to worry and gives us a good reason to believe Bolton has a legitimate worry? That thought alone gives me reason to panic, what about you?
Bolton discussed all this today on Fox News. He said that there is nothing to stop Iran from building more reactors in the future if they are allowed to keep this one now.”
When asked about sanctions, Bolton said “Sanctions have failed because nations like Russia, the Chinese, the Turks, and Venezuela, to name a few, have all made it clear that they are willing to go around the UN sanctions and they don’t intend to abide by the EU sanctions, and they will supply Iran with what it needs to continue not just the nuclear program but it’s economy generally. I think talking about sanctions is simply blinking at reality, missing the point that especially with the fueling of the Bushehr reactor, Iran is getting closer and closer to nuclear weapons.
What is worrisome is that Obama is resigned to Iran getting nuclear weapons and that Iran can be contained. Iran can’t be contained when it has the support of other nations around the world. Obama is not prepared to act but is pressuring Israel not to respond. We are crossing a line that will be impossible to go back.”
Keep in mind that Iran has been very clear that he wants to make a name for himself on the International area. Having nuclear weapons will go a long way to getting his name out there. It is this aggressiveness that may have concerned Saddam, Iraq’s leader, and is why he was so defiant of UN sanctions and mandates.
Perhaps Saddam was unwilling to exposed that he no longer had the nuclear weapons because he destroyed them like the UN told him to do, he just didn’t want any one to know. Why else would Saddam risk so much to let the world think he had nuclear weapons if he didn’t? Perhaps keeping Iran at bay could be the reason?
If it’s true that Saddam had concerns about Iran and it’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, perhaps we should have the same concern. Not only did Saddam have expansion plans, it is likely that Ahmadinejad does as well. Since the oldest of times, that’s been their ancestor’s history? Why would it be any different now, especially when/if they have a super weapon like nuclear arms?
It appears that sanctions have had no impact in stopping Iran because they are using other countries to launder their money and to obtain supplies. To support this suspicion, it was reported yesterday that one or two plans are scheduled to land in Venezuela soon with no passengers on board.
To verify this was true, Fox News contacted a booking agent about this flight and was told there were no passengers on the plane and no seats could be booked. So what does this mean? Could it be that Iran is transferring soldiers or weapons, or are they picking up weapons and supplies from Venezuela. This activity may be proof that sanctions are working.
Judy Miller, also an expert on Fox News says that she disagrees with Bolton. Although she respects him, she thinks he is wrong on this point. First of all, she says the Bushehr reactor is not that important to Iran’s weapon plans because it is the enrichment in other areas that causes concern.
Since Russia is taking away the spent material themselves, which could be used for enrichment, the Bushehr facility should not concern us right now Miller said. Perhaps the concern is how responsible Russia will be since they have not done well in protecting nuclear storage since the Soviet Union fell.
In Conclusion
We can only think that joining the rest of the civilized world is stroking his ego Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but how long will that last. He won’t be satisfied until he gets a nuclear weapon. If he does get one, we can be sure that he will use it. What can we do to stop him, short of attacking Iran now? The conclusion of most experts seems to be that nobody will be able to stop him if it isn’t done before Friday.
